Partner Description
Surrey is one of the UK’s Higher Education Institutions of international standing in teaching and research with traditionally strong collaborative links with industry. The main scientific strengths are in space science and communication, materials and environmental science, health and life sciences. The Surrey Ion Beam Centre (IBC) is the UK National Facility funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to promote and facilitate world class research in the field of ion beam applications for the UK academic and industrial communities.
Role in SPIRIT and tasks
Surrey IBC will provide a well managed TNA to its high quality facilities for research in characterization and modification of materials and ion beam analysis. Surrey has very good collaborative relationships with several other Ion beam facilities in Europe and in the world (Singapore, India, Japan and US) and will lead some of the training and networking activities. Surrey will lead WP3 “Best Practice and Exploitation” and of WP7 “JRA – Extending into New Fields” (including accelerator SIMS). Surrey will also participate in JRA WP5 and WP6.
Relevant Experience
The Ion Beam Centre in Surrey has been the UK national facility for over a decade and is continuously developing and upgrading its facilities to match the best of this kind in the world. Surrey has exceptional facilities for sub-micron IBA. Surrey IBC scientists are successful in getting research funding from the UK Research Councils, Charities and EU Framework Programmes. On the national scale the Surrey IBC provides 3500 h/a of beam time with 85% time allocated to external researchers.
