Partner Description

The CEA, the French Atomic Energy Agency, is a public body research organisation with activities in basic and applied sciences in the fields of physics, chemistry, life sciences, nuclear energy, and advanced technologies. In collaboration with other French science institutions it operates the major national ion accelerators. CIMAP (Centre de Recherche sur les Ions, les Matériaux et la Photonique) is located at Caen and is in charge of providing access to the ion beams of GANIL. In the frame of SPIRIT, CIMAP will give access to the IRRSUD beam line which is running in parallel with the GANIL ion beam lines. The JANNUS installation is a new accelerator complex of the Service de Recherche en Métalurgie Physique (SRMP) of CEA-Saclay.

Role in SPIRIT and tasks

CEA will open to the European community unique facilities by providing the ion highest energies offered within SPIRIT, and the possibility to perform multiple beam irradiations. The infrastructure is composed of two very complementary installations, JANNUS and IRRSUD, both specifically dedicated to radiation-induced materials modifications. CEA will lead the part of the WP5 “In situ Instrumentation”.

Relevant Experience

The scientists of JANNUS and CIMAP are working in the radiation damage field in the both electronic and nuclear regime. They have longstanding experience in nuclear materials and on modification of optical and magnetic properties by ion beams. The scientific and technical staffs have specific skills on: ion beam analysis, on-line characterization of materials and on bolometer detectors.
